Roger Assaf is a Lebanese actor and director born in Beirut in 1941. He has participated in establishing various theatrical institutions in Beirut, most notably the “Shams” Cooperative Association and “Sunflower” Theater. in 1978, he founded ‘Hakawati’ Theater which has performed in Lebanon, Syria, Egypt, Tunisia, and France, and won awards in international festivals. He’s inspired an entire generation of artists and is one of the most influential figures of socially and politically committed Arab theatre, whose performances have managed to reconnect the popular and educated Arab audience with the language of theatre. ‘It’s better to be a victim of evil than to commit it. However, condemning it loudly is better than being silent.’
